Professor Sudhir Kumar Sopory- Hon’ble Chairman of the school, is an Indian Educationist, Plant Physiologist, Scientist and former Vice Chancellor of Jawahar Lal Nehru University, New Delhi. He is the President of the Indian Society of Plant Physiology and the Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, India.
He is an elected fellow of four of the major science academies – Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS), National Academy of Science, India (NASI), Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) followed by The World Academy of Sciences.
He has made prolific contribution to the World of Science serving as a SERB Distinguished Fellow and Senior Emeritus Scientist at International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Bio- Technology, Delhi. The Govt. of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2007 for his contributions to science and technology. He has also received the Career Award of the University Grants Commission followed by Prof. Hira Lal Chakravorty Award of the Indian Science Congress Association. In addition, ISCA honoured him with the Birbal Sahni Centenary Gold Medal Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2005 and he was included in the Republic Day List of 2007.
During his stint as the Vice Chancellor at JNU, the institution acquired a new 1000 acres campus in South Delhi. It also started new doctoral research courses in Energy studies, Human Rights, Silk Route Studies, Climate Change and Biotechnology as well as inaugurated a new Website and a Cyber Library.
Prof. Sopory’s researches have been documented in over 250 articles published in various journals. He has been the editor of 13 books on the subject and has contributed 53 chapters to books written by others. His contribution in research work has received much attention and admiration.
